Sue Goldberg, a Bridges’ counselor for 16 years and Bridges’ Co-Director with Joleen Montoya Dye for a decade, knows well the timeless importance of Bridges’ free, comprehensive and individualized college counseling. Across 20 years, for some 2,700 students and their families, Bridges has worked to increase access to postsecondary certifications and degrees for all who sought our assistance. We do so one person, one dream, each one-on-one session at a time. Goldberg, retired since August 2017, speaks about Bridges’ work in a Spotlight on her:
The crux of Bridges’ work is personal and intimate and relationship based. It’s the opportunity to work with people towards their goals… We’re focusing on their aspirations, and there’s something really beautiful about that. We look at big ideas and big goals and big hopes and dreams, and break them down into little steps. Those steps can be used in whatever you do.
Bridges does not have an agenda for our clients, only that if they choose to pursue postsecondary education they have the assistance, knowledge and tools in order to find and access the schools and programs that best match their needs and objectives. Our goal is that they can transform their project – like working through the admissions and financial aid process – into small, manageable tasks, and in doing so, succeed in whatever they attempt. We hope that they will move forward into their future, better able to navigate the paths they walk and better equipped to achieve their dreams.
